1. Agronomy Advisor-CREW

Position Title: Agronomy Advisor

Reports to: Senior Agronomy Advisor

Location/duty station: Field-based – Aleta wondo, Chuko, and Dara Kabado

Duration: Eight months with possibility of extension depending on the performance and fund availability

Program Description:

Climate Resilience Through Empowering Women(CREW) program aims to increase climate resilient economic empowerment of women coffee farmers in Southern Ethiopia. CREW will advance this vision through targeted approaches at the farm/household, wet mill, and industry level. CREW’s design embraces the mutually reinforcing relationship of women’s economic empowerment (WEE) with our aim to increase thriving and resilient coffee production. CREW’s ultimate beneficiaries will be 76,000 women and men and 80 coffee processing businesses in coffee-growing communities in targeted zones of the Ethiopian regions of Sidama and Oromia.

Position Description:

The Agronomy Advisor shall support the implementation of strategies that will enable smallholder coffee farmers to achieve sustainable increase in coffee quality and yields as per TechnoServe and project’s quality requirements. Responsible for day-to-day execution of the coffee agronomy program, activities plan, local stakeholder relations management and supervise project deliverables of farmer trainers to ensure the timely achievement of targets.

Required skills and experience:

Bachelor’s Degree in Horticulture, or Plant science. May accept experience in lieu of a degree.
At least three years’ professional experience – ideally in the private sector – in one or more of the following areas: coffee processing or agronomy; business or cooperative management; SME development; agriculture; training; extension services.
Demonstrated good understanding of the Ethiopia coffee industry is an added advantage
Possess an aptitude and skills for training adults in a field set up.
Strong planning skills and ability to generate innovative solutions in highly dynamic work situations.
Demonstrated ability to prepare and present well-written, cohesive analyses and reports.
Strong interpersonal, collaborative and cross-cultural skills.
Willingness to be based and to spend time in project implementation sites located in rural areas.
Valid Renewed Motorcycle riding license, ability and willingness to ride a motorcycle is a MUST
Fluency in English and Amharic. Knowledge of local languages, particularly Sidamigna is an added advantage

The Senior Agronomy Advisor shall implement and refine agronomy strategies that will enable smallholder coffee growers under the program to increase coffee quality and yields. The Advisor will play a pivotal role in meeting the beneficiaries target and specifically training 50% of women beneficiaries in Agronomy and other best practices including leadership and gender practices.

Required Skills and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree or higher in a relevant field such as agriculture, environmental or natural sciences, business, or economics.
BA Degree + 5 years or Master’s Degree + 3 years professional work experience, ideally in the private sector, in one or more of the following areas: coffee processing or agronomy, SMEs development, project or business management.
Well-developed computer skills in Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
Strong planning skills and experience working to deliver quality work outputs within strict time lines.
Strong interpersonal and cross-cultural skills.
Well-developed leadership ability combined with excellent communication skills.
Strong oral & written presentation skills in English, Amharic and Sidamigna is an added advantage
Willingness to spend time working and travelling in project sites located rural areas, mainly woredas in Sidama regions

3. INTERN-Agronomy Advisor

Location: Bensa for Sidama region and Bule Hora/Guangua for West Guji

Required No:3

Program Description:

The primary objective of the TNS agronomy program will be to increase production of the coffee tree for coffee farmers through both yield improvement and behavioral shifts due to price incentives. This production improvement will be achieved through educating project farmers on agronomy and environmental best practices, farm management, and assisting them in applying those techniques at an individual farm level. TNS will use two-year farm college training and individual farm visits to improve farmer knowledge of agronomy techniques and oversee implementation.

Support the implementation of strategies that will enable small holder coffee farmers to achieve sustainable increases in coffee quality and yields as per Technoserve quality Responsible for day-to-day execution of the coffee agronomy program, activities plan and supervise project deliverables of farmer trainers to ensure the timely achievement of targets.

Required Skills & Experience:

Willingness to be based in assigned locations and willingness to spend significant time in rural areas
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field – Plant science, Horticulture, Crop science, Agriculture, etc. May accept experience in lieu of a degree
Interpersonal and cross-cultural skills as well as problem solving skills
Planning skills and working to strict time-guidelines
Fluency in Amharic and local language (Sidama Afoo and Afan Oromo)
English oral & written presentation skills
Computer literacy, including Word and Excel
